Of Time and Transience

The wispy cobwebs glitter momentarily in the sunlight, before slipping into oblivion. The breeze that brought in news of warm days and clear skies dies away, only to be reborn as the storm that claims many a life, wrecking havoc, shattering dreams and splitting shadows that stood together, into masses of meat, clothes, thoughts and words. Wars that united nations and pacified rebels and insomniacs pass by the house of the Widow; her ear-splitting cries going unheeded. But the clock chimes on, regardless.

The gold-encrusted pendulum swings on, taking in the sights and sounds of a dying humanity – but never stopping to check itself or pull back a few seconds, saving the little girl the loss of her doll, or the Mother, the loss of a soul. Each second is born anew, pure and unadulterated, unaffected by the ones that have passed or the ones to come. Each moment is unlike another the world has ever seen, springing fresh air from the lungs of infants and urging the frail old man to let out his last. The scarred glass face watches as its hands move around, waiting for the children to grow, and the garden roses to wither. The clock is witness to everything that man sees, smells and hears in the world and smiles in its own mystic way, listening to men talk on love and nature and the glorified past, knowing fully well that the beauty of the things that surround, shall enchant him only so long as he wishes to be enchanted; that the clear pool that he eulogized today would be cursed tomorrow, for swallowing his son and taking with it, a part of his life too. The time-keeper gathers dust as it sits by the cupboard, unnoticed, uncared for. Its still firm hands sweep across its inscrutable face, removing the scars of the past and bringing forth the joys of the future.

But the clock has its time too, and meets its end with dignity. The windings that moved the gears of happiness and the chains of sorrow resign; their role taken over by fresh faces that push the seconds through just as well, pulling the strings that control man’s actions, thoughts and feelings.

Sometimes one wonders why man puts himself through the trauma of watching the clock, willing the minutes to melt past; awaiting his own end. Man has tried for long to make Time yield to him, but the truth remains that he shall but be a mere puppet of his fate dictated by the moving hands. But Time, wise as she is, smiles again, reaffirming that man’s being is fuelled by her own; her ulterior motives faded in her own passing, pulling mankind along warped space, towards the Judgment they face together, with none but each standing as proof of the other’s existence.

Maybe in the end, only Time will tell.

Justice and Beyond

Once again she stood by her own
The friendship: the stillness and she had borne –
Her soul mate in times of need,
Comforting and consoling her over her deed.
Yet again, the men clad in dirty green
Had brought to her another – Oh! Dozens she had seen
Hooded men in black, with eyes misty and throats dry
Gasping about their children, struggling to muffle a cry.
Held them all in her arms, she had
Caressing them softly, whispering there was nothing so bad
About the world they were to step into.
She could sense them sob, she could see them move
Their tender lips parting to tell her what they knew
Of the world – its sorrows plenty and joys few.
“Tell me more” – she would say
But the earth beneath them would give way
And the soul with whom the world she had shared
Would leave her weeping and sad.
“Why do they do this?” she asked her friend
For he was the wisest for company, the Lord could ever send.
“They kill for pleasure, and for greed they kill
And blame their brothers, who would share their will.
They say, my dear, that the Law is blind
Little they know of us who weep, for we are kind.
But come a day there shall, when Man and his sons
Will embrace one another and put down their guns.
And beg your pardon, and of the mighty Lord
And free thy silken braided cord
Of the dead in the ground it has sown
And of the deadly knot for years it has worn.”
And thus spoke he, and blended into the cold
Leaving the noose and her feelings atop the pole.

What is time?

Long ago, in an era bygone,
A light in a cave brightly shone
And an old man in it,in deerskin brown,
Sat on a stone sadly, as he felt let down
"Oh!", he cried, " Of what use is all this strife?
When I have wated my entire life
Oh! I have sure committed a great crime
By not thinking about 'What is time'!"
And slowly, as man's brain was lit,
With precious knowledge, bit by bit,
He sat in his room and pondered
And calculated and wondered,
Whether man's life did time shatter
Or whether it was nothing of matter.
Then came a man in white hair
whose wisdom he did with the world share,
Said he, "Space is a sheet and time is with it.
And all the other men, with concern writ,
Read slowly his lengthy proof,
And said, "I believe this, if not anything else under the roof!"
Decades later, a weak man in a wheelchair
Proclaimed, "Men! I'll tell you, if you care,
That what the white-haired man said was wrong
And I will prove it, no matter how long."
Years passed, and man said, "I sure will give you a dime,
If you pray tell me what is time!"
And then a voice boomed clear and loud,
And a light shone from the overhead cloud,
"Time is what you have presently lost,
And regaining it will come at a cost."

Dr.A.P.J. Abdul Kalam

As people looked on,
A frail figure with smiling lips;
A goblet brimming with knowledge;
Hair flowing around his face,
He strode on the world stage.
He was a man blessed with
the power of absolute simplicity;
Not engulfed by the wrath of power,
A vision was set deep in his eyes -
The vision of a country,
A vision for its citizens,
Vision 2020.

A bright boy hailing from a small town,
He rose up to become the First Citizen.
Love oozed as he spoke;
Love for his country.
A gem set in a piece of marble,
Blessed he was.
Aye, he was blessed.
Blessed to lead our country,
Blessed with the fire -
The fire burning fiercer than flame,
Its yellow luminescence clearly seen,
Its radiance lighting young minds.
It was the fire of a patriot.

Love for his country glistens in him.
Every breath he exhales,
Every word he speaks, is for his country.
The word ‘India’ echoes in his stirrup.
A mighty man with steel-like strength, he is.
And, I know you know who he is,
The man who is blessed,
The man who has our country in his eyes.
The man with a vision-
Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.

The Bombay Rail

The long, blue train that sped past
Left me gaping and aghast
As I stood lone on the platform
On that bright Monday morn.

The speed of the train left me praying,
And reminded me of the saying,
"A train on the track is worth two in the yard,"
As sung by many a Bombay bard.

A large congregation gathered beside the tracks,
With full briefcases, luggage and packs,
Which left me chuckling at the thought
Of whether they get on with all that lot.

But yet again, I was proved wrong,
For these people seemed athlete-born!
One lift of the foot,
And one kick of the boot,
They sprang into the moving train,
As they do when it does rain.

Bursting at its seams, the train sped away,
With people safe inside, all merry and gay.
But this train is truly a lifeline,
For all those who race against time.
I smiled as I stood on the platform
On that bright Monday morn.

Colours- A Poem

This poem received the “Commended” Certificate from the Royal Commonwealth Society for the recently concluded The Royal Commonwealth Essay Competition (2007).

COLOURS

Colours – green, red, yellow and blue

Fascinate him, her, me and you.

Make all things around look new;

How beautiful they are, I’ll tell you!

Green, the colour of vast farms and fields,

So are the trees, plants and leaves.

Little green frogs hopping by the pond,

Singing their croaky little song;

Green trees facing the sun yonder the lawns,

Giving clean, fresh air on all morns.

HOW BEAUTIFUL IS GREEN!

Red, the colour of the raging fire;

Indicates heat, anger and ire.

The colour of blood in every body,

As is the cap of little Noddy.

Red, the colour of lava burning,

So are the rays of the bright sun glowing.

HOW DAZZLING IS RED!

Yellow, the colour of the bright warm Sun,

Lighting up everything and everyone!

Golden beaches that stretch a mile,

Bring to one’s lips, a lovely smile!

Yellow, the colour of the autumn leaves,

Falling down from the maple trees.

HOW WONDERFUL IS YELLOW!

Blue, the colour of the seas and skies,

Cool mountains, dew and ice.

A sapphire is deep blue in colour,

It also denotes legal power.

Blue is the colour of calm and cool;

So are blueberries that make us drool!

HOW PLEASING IS BLUE!

Colours also have another face,

Finding presence in other ways.

Black-listed, red-handed and shades of grey,

Phrases as these have come to stay.

From seeing red to feeling blue,

Colours have crept in our language too!

Colours and shades,

Light up our face.

Tinges and hues,

Cause bliss and blues.

Lending different shades to all under the Sun

Colours add zing to everything, save one.

Racism causing huge divide,

Based on colour of skin and hide,

Does not, to the world provide,

Unity, peace, harmony or pride.

Let not colours tear us apart,

May they just bring joy to heart.
